Dispersants in the Water?
It depends on who’s counting
Are Tourism Boards Complicit?

Reports of the continued use of dispersants and now, unhealthy levels of Corexit chemicals are being discovered in water samples being analyzed by independent scientists and laboratories. Tourism boards and their public relations firms continue spending money from B P and dumping it into advertising telling everybody to, “Come on in! the water’s fine.!” This raises a very interesting ethical and legal question. If BP is funding tourism boards and their Public Relations firms and it turns out that the information being disseminated is not accurate, can these people be held responsible in future civil and criminal lawsuits. Don’t miss the special radio free, key west.com’s Investigative report, to be aired this Thursday. This comes as traces of Corexit have been found in a swimming pool just outside of Tampa, Florida where a family is suffering from symptoms of Corexit poisoning.

Radio-TV Martee Director Pedro Roig resigned Friday after more than seven years at the head of the often controversial United States government stations that broadcast to Cuba. The United States has come up short in getting it’s message to the Cuban people for Cuba successfully jams TV Martee’s over-the-air broadcasts. The station also broadcasts by satellite, and the radio transmits on Ay eM, as well as shortwave frequencies. radiofreekeywest.com has been sharing the “Fat Albert” aerostat studios with Radio Martee since 1981. On the other hand, The Castro administration has been stymied as to how to stop Radio Free, Key West.com’s powerful internet signal. Tune into radio freekeywest.com for real island music. The stories today coming out of the Gulf include residents reporting the continued use of Corexit, broken pipes in the well’s blown out preventer and delays in testing results by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration due to the fact that the agency is now sending samples to a laboratory in Poland for analysis. The information continues to be convoluted which seems to be the preferred methodology of the organizations overseeing the deepwater horizon nightmare.

If Tuesday’s Florida election had been held ninety years ago, women would not have been seen at the polls. It was on this day on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, guaranteeing women the right to vote. In the immortal words of David Bowie’s Suffragette City, “Wham Bam, Thank You Mam”.

More than two hundred men and women packed themselves into a church in Bahama Village last evening to discuss the recent wave of gay related assaults. They were there to represent Key West’s gay population which is estimated to make up about twenty percent of the Key West citizenry of 26 thousand. The big question is, “Were these people involved in physical altercations because they were gay or would the beatings occurred even if they were hetrosexual?” Key West authorities explained that a “hate crime” is difficult to define and prosecute and that most cases would take a jury to decide.

Key West Police have released the names of those involved in the horrific Key West first day of school accident that sent a total of seven people to the hospital. The Key West students involved were all children of the tightly knit Konk community. Xavier “Harvey” Nelson Jamardo was the 16-year-old driver. The students have been identified as 14-year-old Elizabeth Caballero and Gabby Abreau; 15-year-old Marella Barroso; Joel Porta, and Jenna Gonzalez. The passenger of the vehicle struck by the pick up truck, Krystal Candelario, was also treated at an area hospital. One student was airlifted to Miami for their injuries but remains unidentified.

Yesterday August 25th, marked the 26th anniversary of the death author of Truman Capote, who was of a part of Key West’s colorful past. Truman is the source of one of modern history’s greatest retorts when he and fellow author Tennessee Williams, were drinking in a crowded Key West bar. A woman approached the duo and asked Capote to autograph her navel with an eye brow pencil. Her drunken jealous husband upped the ante when he pulled out his penis and asked the question, “How’d you like to autograph this?”

According to the legend, Truman paused and said, “Well, I don’t know if I can autograph it, but perhaps I could initial it.”

There will be a day long event to remember the life of the Green Parrot owner Jim Bean who passed away earlier this month. The gathering will begin at noon Sunday, August 29th with a New Orleans style procession march, down to Fort Zachory with the ultimate send off for Jim planned. After that bands will take the stage all day till the early morning hours.

In the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Department

In 1815 The Island of Key West was granted to Juan Pablo Salas, a Saint Augustine Royal Navy officer, by the governor of Florida, Juan de Estrado. Florida at the time was still a possion of Spain. The transaction was payment for “services rendered to the government”. Salas then turned around and sold Key West to two different people. One man traded Juan Pablo, his trusty boat, worth $575, while another man John Simonton, ponied up $2,000 cash while in a bar in Havana, Cuba . It took Congress in 1822, to straighten out who the righful owner was. It turned out to be Simonton and the rest is history.

GLCC/KWPD Community Meeting
Wednesday . August 25th . 6pm . MCC Church
Press Release from KWPD

An aggravated battery arrest Saturday night is another example that violent behavior toward anyone – gay or straight – is not tolerated in Key West. Several incidents of violence in the past few months have spawned rumors that gay visitors and residents are being targeted by criminals. But an analysis of the batteries and robberies that have occurred over the past year does not show any reason to think the crimes constitute hate crimes.

“As terrible as it is for anyone to be the victim of a battery or robbery, we still need to look at every incident individually,” said Key West Police Chief Donie Lee. “The police department constantly struggles with perception versus the reality of crime. The reality is that we have not had an increase in reported hate biased crimes in Key West.”

Violent crime was down approximately 3 percent last year and is down 12 percent the first six months of this year.

An incident that occurred Saturday night at the Bourbon Street Pub is a good example of how complex the issue can be. A man reportedly “was yelling homosexual slurs at patrons in the bar and hitting people.” According to witnesses, the suspect left the bar, and was later seen on the street threatening to hit passersby with a chain he held in his hand.

Officers arrested Corey Nathan Gankos, 18, and charged him with several felony offenses. However, he was not charged with a hate crime.

“It’s hard to understand a person’s motivation,” said Chief Lee. “A slur used during the commission of a crime doesn’t necessarily constitute a hate crime. Hate crimes are complex and many times difficult to prove because of the requirement of the suspect’s motive.”

The Key West Police Department aggressively investigates any violent crimes against all its residents and visitors. In addition, the department monitors trends in order to act quickly and allocate resources necessary to swiftly apprehend offenders. The ultimate goal is to prevent crime and to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.

The majority of these incidents over the past year have resulted in arrests. And the rise in the rumors and concerns over possible hate crimes has opened a dialogue that is good for the entire community. Chief Lee has been in touch with several gay and lesbian organizations in Key West. Together they are planning some town hall type meetings that will allow all concerned citizens to ask questions and better understand how to prevent any sort of crime in our community, beginning with a meeting at the Metropolitan Community Church at 1215 Petronia.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday Aug. 25th. It is open to the public.

OperaFest

OperaFest

Donna Roll will present the final OperaFest performance at the Waterfront Playhouse on Saturday, June 26 at 8 pm. The evening will feature the brilliantly talented young performers who are part of the Young Artist Program, currently taking place in Key West. Ms. Roll is the artistic director of the program, as well as a celebrated dramatic soprano, director, vocal coach and faculty member of the Longy School of Music in Boston. The students are part of the OperaFest performance training workshop and are chosen through a rigorous audition process from all over the world.

Tickets to the Waterfront concert are $25
and may be purchased at the door the evening of the performance.

The Young Artist Program is an intensive summer workshop for college-aged students and aspiring young professionals. The program allows the students to sharpen their performing skills through classes in acting, dance, coaching and individual vocal instruction, as well as live performances. The participants develop a repetoire of scenes and arias from the opera and musical theater canon during the program, as well as various audition techniques. Laura Shofner, who thrilled Key West audiences with her performance as Eliza in the Key West Pop’s presentation of My Fair Lady was a participant in ’07 and ’08.

Perhaps the most important part of the program are the multiple performing opportunities the students experience while in Key West. During their three weeks here, they perform at muliple venues around town. The Waterfront Playhouse will be the beneficiary of their final performance of the 2010 OperaFest.

Ms. Roll has a distinguished resume as a performer in opera houses and concert halls all over the world. She is a celebrated instructor of opera, vocal technique and performance-related skills and served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music for over a decade, as well as other educational institutions. Many of her students have gone on to professional careers in opera, musical theater and concert stage.

Don’t miss this final chance of the year to be amazed by these gifted young students on the threshhold of their professional careers. For questions or more info, please call Gary Symons at 305-394-7445

Gov. Charlie Crist has announced that the recreational harvest season for bay scallops in Florida will open 12 days earlier than usual this year. The governor is taking this action to help relieve possible economic hardships on Florida fishing communities that may occur due to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“Several people and businesses in Northwest Florida and Big Bend coastal regions asked us to please open the popular bay scallop season early this year,” Gov. Crist said. “These folks depend upon the influx of visitors that come to their communities to scallop each summer, and they need a boost right now to help them recover from the mistaken perception that fishing throughout Florida has been affected by the oil spill, which is not the case.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has issued an order which states that the recreational bay scallop harvest season in specified areas in Florida shall open on June 19 instead of July 1 this year. The order also says that all other provisions governing the harvest of bay scallops shall remain in effect for the duration of the order.

The FWC order, which can be viewed online at MyFWC.com/OilSpill, takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on June 19 and will expire at 12:01 a.m. on July 1. The regular recreational bay scallop harvesting season in Florida occurs from July 1 through September 10 each year.

“Gov. Crist’s decision to open scallop season a little early this year will give Florida residents and visitors a chance to enjoy a terrific family experience outdoors,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “It’s the right thing to do for these fishing communities and further illustrates that Florida is the fishing capital of the world.”

Open scalloping areas on Florida’s Gulf coast extend from the west bank of the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County to the Pasco-Hernando county line near Aripeka. It is legal to take bay scallops only within the allowable harvest areas, and it is illegal to possess bay scallops while you’re in or on state waters outside the open harvest areas, or to land bay scallops outside the open areas.

There is a daily limit of 2 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell or 1 pint of bay scallop meat per person during the open season. In addition, no more than 10 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell or one-half gallon of bay scallop meat may be possessed aboard any vessel at any time. Scallopers are allowed to harvest bay scallops only by hand or with a landing or dip net, and bay scallops may not be harvested for commercial purposes.

Unless otherwise exempt, scallopers will need a regular Florida saltwater fishing license when using a boat to harvest scallops. Those who wade from shore will need a regular Florida saltwater fishing license or a resident shore-based license, which is free beginning on July 1.

Divers and snorkelers are required to display a “divers-down” flag (red with a white diagonal stripe) while in the water. Boaters must stay at least 100 feet away from a divers-down flag in a river, inlet or channel. In open waters, boaters must stay 300 feet away from a divers-down flag.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages everyone to adhere to scallop fishing regulations and collect only the amount of bay scallops they are willing to clean.

More information on bay scallops, including management rules, dive flag regulations and boating safety is available online at MyFWC.com/Rules; click on “Fishing – Saltwater.”
